Golf-Park's run ends as Lewis wins at St Andrews

Golf-Park's run ends as Lewis wins at St Andrews

(Updates at end of play)

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Park Inbee's run of consecutive major victories ended after Stacy Lewis of the United States came from behind to win the women's British Open by two shots at St Andrews on Sunday.

Park, aiming to become the first golfer of either gender to win four majors in a calendar year, was never in contention in Scotland, a final round six-over par 78 consigning the world number one to six-over for the tournament and share of 42nd place.

World number two Lewis was one of a number of players forced to play their third round on Sunday morning after high winds caused the suspension of play on Saturday.

She was one shot behind leader Morgan Pressel heading into the final round, but at one stage found herself three shots behind 36-hole leader Choi Na-yeon.

Lewis birdied the final two holes to finish the round on par and with an eight-under par total of 280 for the tournament, while Choi produced three bogeys in the final six holes as she recorded a one-over 73.

"It all happened so fast there at the end, you're fighting for every shot and then all of a sudden you make a couple of birdies and it's over with," Lewis said in the televised victory presentation.

Lewis, whose other major victory came at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2011, had to wait while Choi finished her final holes.

"Those last few holes are playing so hard and with the pressure, but obviously I did it so it was doable, so I tried to stay in the moment and be ready for a playoff if it happened," she said.

South Korea's Choi tied for second at six-under with compatriot Park Hee-young.

Stacy Lewis ended a streak of 10 major championships by Asian players with a victory on Sunday in the British Women's Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Lewis finished with two birdies and shot a par 72 in the final round for the second major title of her career. She overcame a late collapse by Na Yeon Choi, who had a three-stroke lead with six holes to play.

Choi, who bogeyed No. 17 to end her hopes, ended up tied for second with Hee Young Park, two shots behind behind Lewis, who finished at 8-under-par 280.

Lewis' up-and-down round included five birdies and five bogeys.

"I felt so comfortable on this golf course all week," Lewis told ESPN after the round. "I just hung in there, hung in there today, and to finish the way I did was just awesome.

"I love this place; I love the history that surrounds it, and I know I wanted to win here so bad. I putted so well this week and just ... had a bunch of putts not go in. And I just hung in there and I was very patient -- and I think that was the difference here this week."

Lewis' victory also ended a bid by Inbee Park for a fourth consecutive victory in a women's major.

Park's hopes were dashed early. She trailed by nine strokes entering the final round and then double-bogeyed the opening hole, closing with a 74-78 to finish at 6-over 294.

"I've done something amazing this season," Park said. "I won three straight majors. I don't know if I can do that again."

Suzann Pettersen and American Morgan Pressel shared fourth at 5-under 283 after closing with a 74 and 76, respectively. American Lizette Salas was sixth at 3-under 285 after a closing 73.

Pressel, who holed an 18-foot birdie putt to take a one-shot lead over Lewis into the fourth round, was hurt by a double bogey on No. 12 and an bogey on No. 17.
